Loren Anderson

I am an assistant professor of physics & astronomy at West Virginia University, where I have been since 2011. I hail from Tacoma, WA, and went to school at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA.

I got my PhD in 2009 under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Bania. My dissertation, "Galactic HII Regions: Evolution and Galactic Structure," concerned the plasma spheres surrounding massive stars, which are called "HII regions". I continue to be fascinated with HII regions, and what they can tell us about the structure of our own Milky Way, and they form the bulk of my current research.

In 2009 I moved to Marseille, France to work with Annie Zavagno and Lise Deharveng on Herschel satellite data of Galactic HII regions. I became an assistant professor at WVU in 2011.

My wife Sara and I have two amazing daughters: Solenne and Annika. In my abundant free time, I like to hike, run, ski, play soccer, make beer, play piano and accordian, and fix up our 1911 bulgalow.

Research

My reseach concerns Galactic HII regions, and what they can teach us about the structure of our Galaxy. I have been fortunate to be involved in the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions, the HII Region Discovery Survey, the Herschel HOBYS survey, and the Herschel Hi-Gal survey, among others.

The WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions

With help from numerous undergraduate researchers at WVU, I compiled the WISE catalog of Galactic HII regions by identifying HII regions and HII region candidates from WISE satellite data. We found that all Galactic HII regions have the same characteristic morphology of 22 micron emission surrounded by 12 micron emission, and radio continuum emission spatially coincident with the 22 micron emission. The infrared emission is from dust heated by the radiation from the central star, and the radio continuum is from the plasma created by the central star. The catalog contains over 8000 entries, ~2000 known HII regions, ~2000 HII region candidates that we hope to observe, and ~4000 objects that look like HII regions but lack radio continuum emission. It is the most complete catalog of Galactic HII regions extant.

The HII Region Discovery Survey (HRDS)

Using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), my group discovered 448 new Galactic HII regions by measuring their radio recombination line emission. We followed up this effort with an additional survey using the Arecibo Observatory. We have also derived distances, measured the carbon and helium recombination lines, and determined the electron temperature for these regions. We just completed an additional survey of over 300 region in the WISE catalog, and with the Australia Telescope Compact Array are beginning a survey of HII regions only visible from the southern hemisphere.

The HRDS has doubled the number of known HII regions. Over the survey area, we are complete for all HII regions ionized by O-type stars. We have discovered the most distant HII regions, the largest single Galactic HII region, and a large population of HII regions orbiting near the center of the Galaxy.

Extremely Distant HII Regions

In the HRDS, we discovered a population of extremely distant HII regions in the Outer Arm of the Milky Way. At the time, these were the most distant HII regions ever discovered. Because the Galaxy warps, we need to observe HII region candidates off the Galactic plane to find even more distant HII regions. We have done this in our most recent survey of WISE-identified HII region candidates, and have discovered an even more distant population lying in the Outer Scutum Centaurus spiral arm.

Preliminary analysis of our data suggests that there may not be many more HII regions in this part of the Galaxy. We recently took VLA and GBT NH3 data of additional HII region candidates that may be in this part off the Galaxy, so we'll know for sure soon!

Herschel Observation of Star Forming Regions

The Herschel Space Observatory had five photometric bands in the far-infrared, from 70micron to 500 micron. It is sensitive to dust emission. It has revealed pre-stellar clumps just beginning to form

My interest with Herschel lies in the fact that it can very accurately measure the dust temperature and dust column density of star forming regions. I found in previous work that HII regions have typical dust temperatures of only 30K. We also noticed that locations outside the PDR have enhanced dust temperature, which indicates that we can directly detect the heating of the ISM due to HII regions.

Diffuse Ionized Gas in the Plane of the Galaxy

In the HRDS we detected two velocity components from almost a quarter of all HII regions. These additional velocities are likely caused by diffuse ionized gas in the plane of the Galaxy, i.e., the Warm Ionized Medium. In recent work we have begun to map this emission.
