Dr. Patrick received her BA, MA and PhD degrees in psychology (emphasis in cognitive aging) from The University of Akron, Ohio. She has held appointments as Project Director for three federal grants related to family caregiving. She joined the faculty at West Virginia University as an Assistant Professor in 1998 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004.

Dr. Patrick’s research is in the area of the psychology of adulthood and aging, with a special interest in decision making, social cognition, family caregiving, and successful aging. She teaches graduate and graduate courses in the areas of aging and research methods. She teaches undergraduate courses in the areas of life span development, aging and cognition

Gender: Julie Hicks Patrick, Ph.D. (Life-Span Developmental Program)

Dr. Patrick’s research on gender encompasses both social and cognitive functioning in later adulthood. She and her students investigate gender differences in social support, perceptions of care giving, decision making and problem solving.

Projects in this lab include adult values and experiences, and everyday decision making; preferences for products and living arrangements. .
