Academic Scholarships for Undergraduate Chemistry Majors

The Department of Chemistry maintains several academic scholarships for qualified students who major in chemistry.

2020 Online Scholarship Application (Link will be available in Spring 2020)

The John A. Moore Scholarships are offered in amounts typically ranging from $1000 to $4000 annually depending on the student's financial need. These awards are based on overall academic record as well as scores on the ACT or SAT examinations. Eligibility requires West Virginia residency. Academic performance is reviewed annually. Students should maintain a 3.0 overall GPA, a 3.0 GPA in all chemistry courses, and satisfactory progress towards completion of the chemistry degree in order to be considered for renewal. This scholarship may be held for a maximum of four years.

The Charles L. Lazzell Scholarship typically carries an annual award of $1000-2000 and may be held for a maximum of four years. This scholarship is also based on overall academic achievement, standardized test scores, and financial need. The criteria for renewal are maintenance of an overall 3.0 GPA, a 3.0 GPA in all chemistry courses, and satisfactory progress toward the completion of the degree. Student performance is reviewed annually.

The Carpenter Family Scholarship is currently given typically in the amount of $1000-2000 annually and is renewable for one additional year. This scholarship is awarded to an entering freshman on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated financial need, and standardized test scores. This award requires the recipient to be a West Virginia resident with a declared major in chemistry. Award renewal for the sophomore year requires the recipient to maintain a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA in all chemistry courses during the freshman year. Student performance is reviewed after the first year.

The Robert L. and Patricia Miller Stultz Chemistry Scholarship was established to support the academic development of a rising junior chemistry major who has a demonstrated commitment to the study of chemistry. The award will be made on the basis of academic merit rather than financial need and is renewable for one year. 

The Hodge Scholarship was established to provide financial support to a student majoring in chemistry. This scholarship is limited to tuition, laboratory fees, and incidental fees. Students who have a Foundation, Bucklew, or Promise Scholarship or have a tuition waiver are ineligible for consideration. Renewal is contingent on student performance.

The Herbert and Hannah Seigel Chemistry Scholarship is awarded to a chemistry major with junior or senior rank. This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement and financial need. There is no residency restriction on this scholarship.

The Morrissey-Ropp Chemistry Scholarships are merit-based scholarships that is awarded to chemistry students who have a demonstrated strength in math and chemistry. First preference is to be given to graduates of Martinsburg High School in Martinsburg, WV. This scholarship may be awarded to undergraduate or graduate students. There is no residency restriction for this scholarship.

The William R. and Phylis T. Moore Organic Chemistry Scholarship is a need-based scholarship that is awarded to a West Virginia resident who is pursuing a degree in chemistry. Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in upper division chemistry courses with a concentration in organic chemistry and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

The Bud and Patty Blizzard Scholarship fund provides need-based scholarships to chemistry majors who are residents of West Virginia with first preference given to students who are residents of Grant County in West Virginia. Second preference goes to undergraduate chemistry majors who are West Virginia residents with demonstrated financial need, and then followed by biology, geology, and physics majors from Grant County, WV with demonstrated financial need. 

The Joseph T. Green Memorial Scholarship endowment provides scholarships for students who are either a resident or non-resident of West Virginia pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or biological sciences in the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.
